Do you really know where you stand financially? Many people only look at their bank balance—but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

Your net worth is the true measure of your financial health. It’s the one number that shows if you’re moving forward or standing still. And the best part? You can start tracking it today—for FREE.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to calculate your net worth and give you a simple net worth tracker template I personally use. No complex math, no confusing terms. Just clarity.

What Is Net Worth? (In Simple Words)

Your net worth is everything you OWN minus everything you OWE.

It’s that simple.

· What you own (Assets): Cash, bank balance, investments, property, gold, etc.

· What you owe (Liabilities): Home loan, car loan, personal loan, credit card debt, etc.

Net Worth = Assets – Liabilities

You don’t need to be rich to track this. You just need to be honest.

Why Tracking Net Worth Will Change Your Money Life

· See real progress: Even if you’re saving ₹500 a month, watching your net worth grow keeps you motivated.

· Spot money leaks: If your net worth isn’t growing, you’ll know where to look.

· Make better decisions: It helps you say “no” to unnecessary debt and “yes” to good investments.

How to Calculate Your Net Worth – Step by Step

Step 1: List Your Assets (What You Own)

Liquid Assets (Easy to Access)

· Savings account balance

· Cash in hand

· Fixed deposits (FDs)

Invested Assets

· Mutual fund value (check latest NAV)

· Stocks value

· PPF, NPS, EPF balance

· Gold (jewellery, coins, ETFs)

Personal Assets

· Current market value of your home

· Current market value of your car

· Other high-value items (only if significant)

Step 2: List Your Liabilities (What You Owe)

· Home loan remaining amount

· Car loan remaining amount

· Personal loan outstanding

· Credit card debt

· Education loan

· Any other loans

Step 3: Do the Math

Total Assets – Total Liabilities = Your Net Worth

It’s okay if this number is negative—especially if you’re young or just started earning. What matters is that it’s moving in the right direction.

I update my tracker every month on the 1st. It takes less than 10 minutes:

1. Open my net worth sheet

2. Check my latest mutual fund and stock values

3. Update any changes in loans

4. Let the sheet auto-calculate everything

5. Write the new net worth value in the tracking table

That’s it. Over time, that tracking table becomes your most motivating financial chart ever.
